Key information – music video production in Warsaw

Frequently asked questions about music video production: costs, scripts, shoot organisation, locations, editing and preparing materials for publication and social media.

How much does music video production cost?

Simple productions can start from around PLN 3,000 net. The final price depends mainly on the concept and script, the number of shooting days, crew size, locations, set design, required equipment, scope of post-production and the number of final versions. The more information we have before preparing the quotation, the more accurately we can plan the budget.

Can you help develop the idea and script for a music video?

Yes. We can develop an idea prepared by the artist or create the concept and script from scratch. The form of the film can grow out of the lyrics, mood of the song, the artist’s image or be a completely independent story.

How long does music video production take?

The simplest projects can be completed within a few days, while more complex productions may require several weeks. The schedule depends mainly on script preparation, location scouting and production planning, availability of locations and performers, the number of shooting days and the scope of editing and post-production.

What does music video production look like step by step?

We begin with a conversation about the song, artist, idea and budget. Then we prepare the concept, script and production plan, choose locations and organise the shoot. After filming, we move on to editing, colour correction, any required effects and preparation of the final versions.

Does the artist perform the song live during filming?

Most music videos are produced to a previously recorded track. During filming, the performer sings or plays to playback or partial playback, and we later synchronise the image with the final audio track. A true live performance is different, as we also record the sound of the actual performance.

Can a music video tell a story?

Yes. A music video can tell a complete story with characters and dramatic development, or combine a narrative layer with the artist performing the song. The story can directly follow the lyrics or simply draw on their emotions and meaning.

Do you produce music videos on green screen?

Yes. Green screen makes it possible to replace the background with graphics, animation, a virtual set or another image created in post-production. It can be the main technique used throughout the video or just one element of a larger production.

Can a music video be filmed in one shooting day?

Yes, many projects can be completed during one well-planned shooting day. More complex scripts, a larger number of locations, narrative scenes or elaborate set design may require additional days. We define the scope of the shoot before production begins.

Do you prepare music video versions for social media?

Yes. From the same footage, we can prepare short promotional clips, trailers, Reels, Shorts and vertical 9:16 versions. If these formats are an important part of the promotion, it is best to take them into account during shot planning and framing.

Do you produce music videos outside Warsaw?

Yes. We film throughout Poland and abroad. The production location is chosen to match the script, character of the song, budget and organisational requirements of the project.

How many rounds of revisions are included?

Our B2B agreements normally include two comprehensive rounds of revisions. The scope of editing, approval process and any additional versions are agreed before production begins.

What should I prepare before contacting you?

The most useful starting points are a link to the finished or working version of the song, a short description of the artist, an approximate deadline, budget and a description of the idea, if one already exists. If there is no concept yet, we can start by developing one together.

Music video as a film form – from idea to finished clip

A music video can be a simple recording of a performance, but it can also become an independent film form: tell a story, build a world around the music or combine the artist’s performance with narrative, set design and visual creation.

The starting point may be the lyrics, the emotion, rhythm and character of the song, the artist’s image or a completely independent idea. What matters most is that image and music work together and form a coherent whole.

You Are Beautiful – preparing a narrative music video

That is why music video production can begin either with an existing concept from the artist or with a joint search for an idea that we later develop into a script, production planning, a shooting plan and the final edit.

Narrative music video – a story told through images

In a narrative music video, music becomes part of the story. We can create characters, relationships, conflict and dramatic development, just as in a short film.

You Are Beautiful – a still from the narrative music video for *Freedom Is Near*

The story can grow directly from the lyrics or be a loose interpretation of their emotions, mood and meaning. As a result, the music video does more than illustrate the song — it can create its own world and its own story.

Jesteś piękna – Freedom Is Near

One example of this approach is the music video “Jesteś piękna” by Freedom Is Near. Instead of limiting the video to a performance in front of the camera, we built the film around a narrative story in which music and image guide the viewer through successive stages of the plot.

In this type of production, the script, cast, locations, direction of the characters and the way emotions are created through images are particularly important. Music sets the rhythm of the film, but the story should also remain clear on a purely visual level.

Fisheclectic – Blisko

“Blisko” by Fisheclectic is an example of a music video built entirely as a short narrative film, without a traditional performance by the artist on camera.

The main character is a girl who discovers a mysterious attic in an old house. She explores the space, touches the objects she finds there and gradually moves deeper into a place full of light, details and ambiguity.

The film does not illustrate the song’s lyrics literally. Instead, it builds its own story based on curiosity, mystery and the search for something beyond the character’s everyday experience.

Now We Are Soldiers – a narrative protest song against war

“Now We Are Soldiers” by Colin Clue was created as a narrative protest song against the war in Ukraine. The script follows a family whose ordinary life is suddenly transformed by the reality of war.

Rather than speaking about war only through images of combat, the story also focuses on relationships between loved ones, fear, uncertainty and the consequences of conflict for ordinary people.

The narrative layer is combined with Colin Clue’s performance and images of war. As a result, the music, the artist’s presence on camera and the story of the characters form one dramatic whole.

Ajde Jano – narrative and performance by The Fedor Family

“Ajde Jano” by The Fedor Family combines an extensive narrative layer with the band’s performance of the song. Scenes with the characters are intercut with the musicians’ performance in folk costumes, filmed inside an old mill.

Ajde Jano – narrative music video by The Fedor Family

The narrative layer tells the story of a girl and a boy meeting in a rural summer setting. Flowers, a wreath, a meadow, a stream and small gestures between the characters create a nostalgic story without the need for dialogue.

In this case, the band’s performance does not replace the story, but becomes its second layer. Intercutting scenes with the musicians and the story of the characters keeps the performers present while also allowing an independent film narrative to unfold.

These four productions show that narrative music videos can take very different forms: from stories without the artist appearing on screen, through symbolic narratives, to combinations of storytelling and performance by a solo artist or full band.

More examples of different approaches to storytelling, artists, actors and the visual side of filmmaking can be found in our film production case studies.

Performance – the artist in front of the camera

One of the basic forms of music video is performance, where the artist or band performs in front of the camera. It can form the main part of the video or be one of several layers, intercut with narrative scenes, location footage or stylised material.

Artist performance – Ajde Jano – The Fedor Family

During filming, the track is usually played back as playback or partial playback, while the performer sings or plays to the pre-recorded track. This allows us to synchronise the image precisely later with the final studio recording.

Performance can be filmed in a real location, in a studio, on stage, on a specially prepared set or on green screen. Important factors include lighting, camera movement, framing, the character of the space and the way the performer is directed.

Artist performance – Ajde Jano – The Fedor Family

In our productions, performance appears in different forms: as part of the narrative in “Now We Are Soldiers”, as a layer intercut with the story in “Ajde Jano”, and as the main element in music videos created for The Fedor Family and AmenBreak.

A complex storyline is not always necessary. A well-planned performance can carry an entire music video if the image, lighting, set design and direction of the artist are matched to the character of the music.

Green screen and visual creation in post-production

Not every music video has to be filmed in a real location. Green screen allows us to record the artist in controlled conditions and then replace the green background with graphics, animation, a virtual set or another image created in post-production.

This solution can be used throughout the entire music video or only in selected scenes. It provides considerable visual freedom and makes it possible to create a space that would be difficult, expensive or simply impossible to produce in a real location.

Szybko 1, 2, 3 – The Fedor Family

In the music video “Szybko 1, 2, 3” by The Fedor Family, the band’s performance was filmed on green screen. In post-production, the green background was replaced with specially prepared graphics that became part of the visual style of the entire clip.

For this type of production, correct background lighting, proper separation of performers from the green screen, costume selection and the way the camera is used are all important. These factors later affect the quality of the keying process and how naturally the artist can be integrated with the replacement background.

AmenBreak – performance on green screen

We also used green screen for the AmenBreak music video. Here, chroma key was combined with the performers’ performance, compositing and motion design, creating a more stylised visual approach.

Green screen does not have to mean photorealistic replacement of a location. It can also be used deliberately as a stylistic device, making it possible to build a more graphic, abstract or intentionally unreal world for the music video.

The choice between a real location, studio and green screen depends mainly on the concept of the film, the visual style of the song and the production budget. Sometimes the best solution is to combine several of these methods within one music video.

Different music video styles for one artist

Long-term cooperation with an artist makes it possible to search for a different visual form each time without repeating the same idea. The same band can appear in a narrative music video, studio production, green screen project or a real location.

A good example is our long-term cooperation with The Fedor Family. We have produced music videos for the band in different styles and with different levels of production complexity.

Ajde Jano

“Ajde Jano” combines the band’s performance in an old mill with a separate narrative layer. It is an example of a music video in which the performers and the story of the characters exist in parallel.

Szybko 1, 2, 3

“Szybko 1, 2, 3” was created using green screen, a virtual background and extensive image post-production. Here, performance plays the central role, while the world of the film is built mainly during post-production.

Hej w dzień narodzenia

“Hej w dzień narodzenia” is a Christmas music video for a traditional Polish carol performed by The Fedor Family, showing yet another visual style and production approach.

Ave Maris Stella

“Ave Maris Stella” is another production for the band, different in form from the previous music videos and showing that successive songs can maintain the artist’s recognisable identity while still changing the visual language of the film.

In long-term cooperation, it is important to us that each new music video has its own character, while remaining consistent with the music and image of the performer.

How music video production works – from concept to publication

Music video production begins long before the shooting day. First, we get to know the song, the artist’s character, the idea for the film, the budget and the planned production date. On this basis, we can propose a form best suited to the music and production possibilities.

Concept and script

If the artist already has an idea, we can help develop it and translate it into film language. If the concept is still being created, we can prepare it from scratch based on the song, its lyrics, mood and the performer’s image.

For more complex productions, we prepare a script and sometimes also a storyboard that helps us plan individual scenes, shots and the way the story will unfold.

Pre-production and shoot preparation

The next stage is production preparation: choosing locations, cast, costumes, set design and the required equipment. We also establish the schedule, the order of scenes and the way performance, narrative scenes and any special effects will be produced.

Pre-production location scouting – Now We Are Soldiers – Colin Clue

The more precisely the shooting plan is prepared, the more efficiently we can use the time of the artists, actors and the entire crew on set.

Filming

Depending on the concept, the music video can be filmed in one location, in several different places, in a studio or on green screen. We can combine the performer’s performance, narrative scenes, detail shots and more abstract imagery.

Location filming – Now We Are Soldiers – Colin Clue

A simpler project can be completed during one shooting day, while a more extensive script may require several days of filming and work in different locations.

Editing and post-production

After filming, we synchronise the footage with the final version of the song and begin editing. The pace of cuts, order of scenes and way the narrative develops are matched to the rhythm, dynamics and character of the music.

During post-production, we also carry out colour correction, image finishing, compositing, green screen keying and effects, if required by the concept.

Final music video and promotional materials

We prepare the final material in a format suitable for publication on YouTube, the artist’s website or other channels.

From the same footage, we can also prepare trailers, shorter promotional clips, Reels, Shorts and vertical 9:16 versions for social media. If these materials are required, it is best to plan them before filming begins.

We adapt the production scope to the budget

Not every music video requires the same production scope. A simple performance in one location is planned differently from a green screen production, and differently again from an extensive narrative music video with cast, set design and several shooting days.

We adapt the number of shooting days, crew size, equipment, locations, scope of set design and level of post-production to the character of the project and the available budget.

Music video production – soul seed media studio

Sometimes the best solution is a simple, well-planned concept produced with limited resources. In other cases, a larger budget allows for working with actors, more elaborate locations, effects, additional shooting days and more advanced post-production.

We do not assume that a more expensive production will automatically be better. What matters most is that the form of the film matches the music, the artist’s image and the realistic possibilities for promotion.

Now We Are Soldiers – outdoor music video shoot

Before preparing a quotation, it is useful to define: the approximate budget, deadline, character of the song, the idea for the music video and whether the film should be produced in one location, several locations, a studio or using green screen.

Based on this information, we can propose a specific production scope and choose solutions that make the best use of the available resources.

We bring our film production experience to music videos

soul seed media has been operating since 2006. During that time, we have delivered film productions including music videos, narrative films, advertising, promotional and documentary films as well as other audiovisual formats for artists, companies and institutions.

Music video as a fully developed film form

We treat a music video not only as promotional material for a song, but as an independent film form. Depending on the concept, it may require a script, cast, locations, set design, lighting, effects and carefully planned storytelling.

In more complex productions, we work much like we would on a short narrative film: planning scenes, movement of actors and camera, shooting order and the way emotions are built.

Jesteś piękna – narrative music video by Freedom Is Near

Award-winning productions

The music video “Jesteś piękna” by Freedom Is Near received second prize in the music video category at the KSF Niepokalana 2021 festival.

Award for the Jesteś piękna music video – KSF Niepokalana 2021

Productions like this show that a music video can combine music, narrative, work with actors and consciously designed visual language to create a film that works beyond the promotion of the song itself.

Filming and post-production

For every production, we select equipment to match the character of the project. We work with professional cameras, photographic and cinema lenses, lighting and post-production tools that allow us to maintain high image quality from the shooting stage to the final file.
